December 7 “Why Bethlehem?”

Advent Sermon Series

November 30 “Why the Prophecies?” People yearning for a better future were urged by the prophets to keep the faith as they provided people with the hope of a coming Savior. Their Savior would rescue His people and restore them to God. Through the prophecies we see how God works His purposes. Scriptures: Isaiah 9:6-7; Luke 1:67-79.

December 7 “Why Bethlehem?” Leading to the birthplace of Jesus, Bethlehem had a mixed legacy. This unassuming town provided ancient Israel with King David, and as “the house of bread,” provided us with He who is the bread of life. Through the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem we see how God works His purposes. Scriptures: Micah 5:2; Luke 2:1-5.

December 14 “Why the Shepherds?” Shepherding was an occupation that everyone needed, and no one desired. To set the tone for the entire life and message of Jesus, God brought lowly shepherds to be the first to see and worship the Savior of the world. Through simple shepherds we see how God works His purposes. Scriptures: Luke 2:8-14; Luke 2:15-20.

December 21 “Why the Angels?” Angels carry out the urgent work of God, bringing messages of critical importance to God’s people, and performing tasks that display God’s power. Through angels, we can see how God works His purposes. Scriptures: Luke 1:26-38; Luke 2:8-14.

December 24 “Why Did Jesus Come?” Joseph was told, “You are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Jesus came to earth with a mission. Several times Jesus used the phrase, “I have come…” to state his mission. Through Jesus, we see how God works His purposes. Scriptures: Matthew 1:18-23; Luke 2:1-20; John 1:1-5, 10-14. Scriptures: John 14:1-6; 1 Timothy 2:3-6.

December 28 “Why Do I Need to Believe in Jesus?” Jesus coming to earth gives us several reasons for our need to believe in Him. Only in Him do we come to know the extent of God’s love, the forgiveness of our sins, and abundant life now and eternal life then. Through belief in Jesus, we see how God works His purposes. Scriptures: John 14:1-6; 1 Timothy 2:3-6.
