Advent Sermon Series
December 24 “Why Did Jesus Come?” Joseph was told, “You are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Jesus came to earth with a mission. Several times Jesus used the phrase, “I have come…” to state his mission. Through Jesus, we see how God works His purposes. Scriptures: Matthew 1:18-23; Luke 2:1-20; John 1:1-5, 10-14. Scriptures: John 14:1-6; 1 Timothy 2:3-6.

Lighting of the Christ Candle
This evening marks the coming of Christ into the world. In anticipation of Christ’s coming, we lit four candles during Advent: The Prophecy Candle, The Bethlehem Candle, The Shepherd’s Candle, and The Angel’s Candle. (The candlesare lit.)
In his gospel, Matthew begins his narrative by saying, “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows.” The angel announced to the shepherds, “today in the city of David
there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” After speaking with the inquiring magi, Herod gathered all the chief priests and scribes to find out where the Christ was to be born.
Jesus was professed in this way: “I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”
Jesus prayed to the Father: “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” About his gospel John wrote: “These things have been written that you may believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.”
We are celebrating CHRISTmas. Because of Bethlehem, Jesus, the Christ, has been born for us. Love is born. Hope is here. Christ is with us.
Let us now light the Christ
candle.
